Central High School Departments:
The courses of study offered students of Central High School are as thorough, as complete, and as extensive as those offered in any preparatory school.
ENGLISH
Of the many departments English is perhaps the most outstanding. Four years of English is required for graduation. Freshmen and sophomore English is made up of work in theme construction and punctuation. American Literature is taken in the junior year and English literature in the senior year.
The English faculty: Miss Clinton, Miss Gladding, Miss G. Mauzy, Miss Nolan, Miss Haszinger, Miss Stanton, Miss Polack, Miss Wilson, Mr. Jordan, and Miss Oakley.
LANGUAGES
Excellent courses in four foreign languages are offered at Central. Latin may be studied four years, French three, and Spanish three. German made its debut this year.
Foreign language faculty: Miss Dix, Miss Thorburn, Miss Cooke, Miss Raines, Miss Moreno, Miss Watkins, Miss Young, Mr. McKnight and Mr. Ellis.
MATHEMATICS
Four years of math are offered, this course including elementary algebra, plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry.
Math faculty: Miss McGrath, Miss L. Mauzy, Miss Stewart, Miss Seffins, Miss Kirk, Miss Beckham, Mr. Taylor, and Mr. McKnight.
HISTORY
Our courses offered in history are unsurpassed by any high school in the south. Ancient and European history may be taken in the first two years if desired. American history, which is required for graduation, is generally studied in the junior year.
History faculty: Miss Horton, Miss Deaderick, Miss Jones, Miss Willingham, Miss Metz, and Miss Evans.
SCIENCE
Four years of science, including general science, biology, chemistry, and physics, are offered to the Central students. The laboratories are fitted with the best and most modern equipment obtainable.
Science faculty: Miss Keith, Mr. Simpson, and Mr. Farish.
COMMERCIAL
The commercial department, undoubtedly one of the most practical, has proven its efficiency by the graduates whom it has sent into the business world.
Commercial faculty: Miss Reiter, Mr. Boswell, Mr. Macon, and Mr. Magevney.
EXPRESSION
The expression department has very definite plans, which seem to be successful, judging from the splendid achievements of the pupils who have taken this work.
Expression faculty: Miss Warne and Miss Cohn.
DOMESTIC SCIENCE
This department offers to the girls of Central courses in sewing, cooking, and homemaking.
Domestic science faculty: Miss Woods, Miss Finley, Miss Lanier, and Miss Kellar.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Physical education is one of the most valued departments of Central High School. Two years of gym is required of the girls and three years of military is required of the boys.
Physical education faculty: Miss McDonald, Lieut. Harant and Coach Magevney.
TECHNICALThe technical department is one of the best equipped in the city. It is divided into three sub departments: woodwork, forge and mechanical drawing.
Technical faculty: Mr. Printup.
ART
Art in Central is not a side line; is is one of the subjects for special study. This department is growing to be one of the strongholds of true culture in the school.
Art faculty: Miss Schneider.
MUSIC
Our music department is composed of the orchestra, the band, the glee club, and the choruses. No department gives greater pleasure to the school than this one.
Music faculty: Mr. Hawke.
STUDY
Two things absolutely essential for an A-1 high school are a good reference library and a quiet study hall. The well equipped library at Central is a branch of the large Cossitt library.
Study faculty: Mrs. Ellis, Miss Parr, and Miss Levy.
CAFETERIA
Under the supervision of Mrs. Byington the Central High lunchroom has become a cafeteria remarkable not only for its scientific and modern management, but also for it's attractive and home like atmosphere.
MATRON
No one is more valuable to the school than Miss Saxby, who is in charge of the matron's room.
