"Tennessee
Place Names and Post Offices"
Searching for a long-forgotten community? Browse the list of current & historic Shelby County Post Offices with their dates of operation. However, don't assume that a community died when the post office closed. Some historic towns changed names or relocated due to the railroads (example: Arlington was once known as Withe/Wythe Depot). A few small communities remain on present-day maps, despite the loss of their post offices (example: Rosemark, Bolton). Several historic communities were absorbed by Memphis, Germantown or Bartlett (example: Buntyn, Frayser, Berclair, etc.) Another example: the present-day city of Bartlett uses Memphis' postal facilities, while the community of Ellendale (annexed by Bartlett in the late 1970s) retains its own small post office.
Searching for information on a particular postmaster? The US Postal Service has an excellent page, "Postmaster Finder Research Information".
Another option: the 1888 Rand McNally Tennessee Railroad Map (Shelby County section) includes post offices.
