This index lists people from Shelby County who filed claims with the Southern Claims Commission (1871-1873) for property taken by Federal military personnel during in the Civil War.

Each claimant was required to describe their losses in detail, and to prove his loyalty to the Union. Witnesses (neighbors, friends, former slaves, etc) gave testimony in support of his/her allegations. Claims were either approved, disallowed or barred.

All claim files (allowed, disallowed & barred) are in the National Archives. Disallowed or barred files have been microfilmed and are also available at the Tennessee State Library and Archives. Some files were very extensive, so photocopy expense varies - consult the TSLA site for details.
