Shelby County is located in West Tennessee, one of the state's three "Grand Divisions". West Tennessee was opened to settlers with the signing of the Chickasaw Treaty on October 19, 1818. Shelby County was created by an act of the Tennessee General Assembly on November 24, 1819. The county seat is Memphis.
