(NOTE)took his name from one of his early owners, Hugh MAGEE, who bought him  on the slave market at Enterprise (?MS) when he was 19..  Later sold to Victory STEEN, who operated a plantation near Florence in Rankin County, and lived there until the Battle of Vicksburg... fall of Vicksburg  prompted him to run away from the STEEN plantation and he joined the Union Army (twice wounded).
