My grandmother, Gertrude Martin SANDERS, was fascinated with people who lived to celebrate old age. For many years, she faithfully collected articles and obituaries from the Memphis area newspapers about elderly subjects and their "secret to a long life".
Locations: The majority of subjects had ties to the Mid-South region (western TN, northern MS, eastern AR, western KY), but there are several from outside the region who had no apparent ties to the Mid-South - other than my grandma's curiosity! Migrations were captured in the abstracts.
Family Ties: I've included the names of parents, siblings, spouses and children when available. Married women were also indexed under their maiden name (when known).
Vital information regarding military service, slavery and immigration was also included on each subject.
There are few newspaper sources or dates noted on the clippings. However, most articles appear to be from one of the two Memphis newspapers: The Press-Scimiter (ceased operation in 1980's).and The Commercial Appeal. The Press-Scimiter's newspaper clipping / photo "morgue" is now a part of the Special Collections/ Mississippi Valley Collections at McWherter Library (University of Memphis).
