John Brock Family

Posted by James Barry Morgan bmorgan@texasonline.net on Tue, 16 Feb 1999

I am looking for any information on my great-great grandparents, John and Sarah BROCK who appear in the 1880 census of Fayette, Co. Tennessee. They are shown on page 376A dwelling #149, family #153 as follows:
John Brock W M 60 works on farm born in SC
Sarah Brock W F 60 keeps house born in SC
Jane Brock W F 29 at home born in GA
Six doors (dwelling #155) away in this same census/county live my great-grand parents, James and Mary (Brock)Morgan. Mary Morgan is the daughter of John and Sarah Brock. James and Mary's family is shown as follows:
James Morgan W M 33 works on farm born in GA
Mary Morgan W F 34 born in GA
John Morgan W M 9 born in GA
William Morgan W M 5 born in TN
Delia Morgan W F 1 born in TN
Also in Fayette County in the 1880 census is the Younger Brock family. He appears to be the brother of John Brock and is shown in dwelling # 63.(See notes below on Younger and John Brock)

John and Sarah Brock and James and Mary Morgan moved together from Walker County Georgia to Fayette County Tennessee between 1870 and 1880 because both families are shown in the 1870 census of Walker County, Georgia, as follows:
1870 Census of Walker County Ga. (page 262, Frick’s Gap area) gives the following:
John Brock 53M born S.C.
Sarah Brock 53F born S.C.
Mary Brock 24F born Ga.
Sarah A. Brock 22F born Ga.
Amanda J. Brock 19F born Ga.
Eliza Brock 17F born Ga.
Cornelia Brock 10F born Ga.
James Morgan 20M born Ga.(this James Morgan is my GGF who is shown to be a farm laborer living with the John Brock family. I have found the marriage license between James Morgan and Mary Brock in the Hamilton Co. Tennessee Courthouse in Chattanooga. They were married in December, 1870. They moved to the Memphis area sometime between 1871 and 1875 based on the birthdates/birthplaces of their children).

There are a Benjamin Brock and Younger Brock living in the same area as John Brock so there is probably some relationship there. There is another John Brock family (not my John Brock family) shown in the East Armuchee area of Walker Co. so don't confuse this one with my John Brock.

I would like any information on what happened to John and Sarah Brock after 1880. I would also like any info on where in South Carolina they were from, when and where they were married, what Sarah's maiden name was etc.

Any info on James Morgan's parents would be appreciated also.
Thanks,
James Barry Morgan

Josiah Franklin Slaughter

Posted by Julie Slaughter ihateputers@hotmail.com on Tue, 09 Feb 1999

Surnames: SLAUGHTER, McCORD
I am looking for Josiah Franklin Slaughter, son of William Pinkney Slaughter. Josiah (Jody) married Nancy Elizabeth McCord aka Bettie, Jan. 16,1883 in Fayette co.Tn. After having one son, William Vernon Slaughter, and while Bettie was expecting another baby, Jody faked his own death. He left his shoes on the banks of a river and walked away. The second son is named Wesley Vestus Slaughter. The boys would never talk about Jody and anytime he tried to contact them (one known time), the boys would ignore the plea. Now all these people are dead and we need to find out what happened to Jody. If he remarried and where and how he lived and died. Did he have other children. Josiah's birthdate is not known. He should have been born around 1867. he's 13 in the 1880 census. Does anyone know this family?
