Samuel I. Crawford, a prominent farmer of Fayette County, is a native of this county, born July 4, 1852, and is the son of William M. and Rachel (Walker) Crawford, both natives of North Carolina. The father was born September 27, 1808, and died in Fayette County, September 15, 1878; the mother was born November 20, 1818, and is still living. The were married in 1838 in North Carolina, and in 1849 moved to Fayette County, Tenn., four miles southwest of Somerville, and lived there seventeen year. In 1868, they moved to Williston, where the father died of yellow fever in 1878; he was an exemplary member of the Methodist Episcopal church South, as the mother is also. Our subject is the youngest of four children; he was chiefly educated at the Bingham military School in Orange County, N.C. After completing his education he kept book for ten years for W.H. Crawford & Co. at Williston. In 1877 he purchased a farm near Williston and has since given his time to farming, meeting with marked success. February 3, 1875, he married Miss Josie Phillips, a native of Fayette County and a niece of the well known Dr. J. W. Phillips of Williston. She was born May 18, 1855, and by this marriage they had five children, all boys. Mr. Crawford is a Democrat and manifests a deep interest in the party. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church South, and mrs. Crawford, who is a woman of deep piety, is a worthy member of the Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Crawford is an honest man of sound judgement and kind heart.
